LONDON, UK, Feb. 20, 2025 – People with a medical emergency in London could now find themselves being taken to hospital in a fully electric ambulance.
In January last year, London Ambulance Service introduced Ford E-Transit 1 electric ambulances as part of its fleet. The emergency vehicles, engineered with support from the Ford Pro Special Vehicles team, have been working round the clock providing the same front-line response service as diesel-powered models – but importantly, also produce zero emissions while driving.
London Ambulance Service’s strategy of adopting electric vehicles in front-line roles is part of its Carbon Neutral Plan, which targets net zero direct emissions by 2040. The Service also says its Ford E-Transit electric ambulances have delivered a fuel cost saving of almost 75 per cent when compared with diesel-powered equivalents. 2
A new film from Ford Pro follows two back-to-back shifts by paramedics as they respond to emergencies across London. We see a typical weekend workload through the crews’ eyes, using the electric E-Transit to deliver life-saving equipment and expertise to those in need during 24 straight hours of lights-and-sirens work in one of Europe’s busiest cities.
“It’s rewarding to see London Ambulance Service recognise the capability of E-Transit electric ambulances and help prove that the driving range and versatility of electric vehicles means they can serve even in front-line emergency roles. We’re proud to strengthen our relationship with London Ambulance Service and use Ford Pro’s expertise in electric vehicles to support their life-saving work.”
Mandy Dean, director, Commercial Vehicles, Ford of Britain and Ireland
“I don’t think we’ve ever gone below 50 per cent of battery, and that’s on a 12-hour shift.”
Himnah Kibuka, London Ambulance Service paramedic

1 Up to 317 km driving range based on full charge of E-Transit. Estimated range using Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Figures shown are for comparability purposes and should only be compared with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. The actual range may vary due to various factors (e.g. weather conditions, driving style, route profile, vehicle condition, age and condition of the lithium-ion battery). The declared WLTP fuel/energy consumptions, CO2-emissions and electric range are determined according to the technical requirements and specifications of the European Regulations (EC) 715/2007 and (EU) 2017/1151 as last amended. The applied standard test procedures enable comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers.
2 Calculated using Ford Transit diesel ambulance fuel costs at 27 pence-per-mile and Ford E-Transit ambulance energy costs at 7 pence-per-mile. Figures supplied by London Ambulance Service.
